the Emperor William of Germany possessed no genius , whilst the late King of Italy , was in many respects a distinctly unheroic figure ; but
he believes that if Strafford had had even a William or a Victor Emmanuel for a master , he would have won the battle for the monarchy .
He had only a Charles Stuart , and he lost . ' Gharles never trusted him unreservedly , n , ever supported him Loyallynever even , dealt with
, him straightforwardly . ' The book is written with great ability and is marked by sound criticism and a lucid arrangement of facts .
From Messrs . Moffatt «^& Paige . —* Moffalt ' s Deductions from EuclicL' This book consists of a series of exercises on the first six books of
Euclid fully worked out ; not only teachers _ "is . of mathematics but private students will find much in these pagfes that is helpful and

Explorers and Explorations / a new series , wfyich seeks to provide a fairly complete * biographical history of geographical discovery .
The idea is to deal mainly in each volume with one prominent name associated with some particular regionand to group around a story of
personal adventure , and research the leading facts in the history of exploration . The career of the discoverer of Davis' Straits was full of
romance and incident ; and his services to science were certainly worthy of greater attention than they have hitherto received . He is depicted
in this book as a thorough seaman , a scientific observer who was far in advance of his times , and a man of great personal gallantry and
unselfishness . He was the lifelong friend of Baleigh and Gilbert ; and Commander Markham , in the course of this vigorous and picturesque
narrative , makes good , we think , his assertion that John Davis deserves to take rank with the * foremost sea-worthies of the glorious reign of
Queen Elizabeth . ' The book is illustrated , and contains several good coloured maps . It is also provided with an unusually comprehensive
index , a feature which we trust will be retained throug-houfc the series . Altogether this is a ' capital book , and one which gives the reader a
vivid impression of the achievements and adventures of the brave navigators of the past . From Messrs . Relfe Brothers . — New Model Court-Hand French and German Copy Books . '
The new style of vertical writing is placed before the pupil in these capital books . The copies are selected from popular French an £
